Monheim, March 28, 2018 – Bayer and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) have announced an innovative partnership to support farmers in restoring native vegetation on their farms in Brazil, one of the most biodiverse regions in the world and also one of the most threatened.
The partnership in the state of Mato Grosso, one of the key states for agricultural production in Brazil began in March 2018. Through the partnership Bayer will include environmental technical assistance and TNC will provide assistance to the farmers to foster their compliance with Brazil’s environmental legislation - the Forest Code.
“Considering that the majority of Mato Grosso state´s territory is comprised of rural properties, working with farmers in private lands is crucial to help the state achieve its conservation goals. Also, compliance with environmental legislation is mandatory for farmers, but this may be difficult to achieve due to lack of technical assistance or high implementation costs. With scientific information and collaborative action, the TNC-Bayer initiative will contribute to addressing these bottlenecks”, explains Antonio Werneck, The Nature Conservancy Brazil´s Executive Director.
“We are very pleased to partner with TNC in such an innovative approach that delivers a valuable service to farmers while protecting the environment through state-of-the-art reforestation. We at Bayer are committed to sustainable agriculture, and this includes promotion of good agricultural practices and the careful protection and restoration of natural resources. TNC and Bayer will work together to make this project a success”, said Bernd Naaf, Head of Business Affairs & Communications at Crop Science, a Division of Bayer.
Bayer works with more than 100.000 rural producers through its RedeAgroservices program and, in cooperation with TNC, it will offer three types of technical services:
1. Knowledge/training about the mandatory Rural Environmental Registry, an electronic registry of georeferenced information about rural properties;
2. Development of restoration plans for Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs) and Legal Reserves (LRs). An APP is defined in the Brazilian Forest Code as a “protected area covered or not with native vegetation, with the environmental functions of preserving water resources, landscapes, geological stability, biodiversity, and genetic fluxes of flora and fauna, as well as protection of the soil and securing the wellbeing of human populations” (Article 1, II);
3. On the ground technical assistance to restore natural areas in rural properties, including basic restoration training of farm crews.
These services will be delivered by TNC technical experts. They will be responsible for providing technical assistance to farmers who participate in Bayer´s program and choose to receive support. This initiative will work in three priority municipalities – Nova Mutum, Lucas do Rio Verde and Sorriso – in Mato Grosso, in central Brazil.
The Bayer-TNC engagement is an important addition to the initiatives that TNC and other environmental organizations, governments, and individuals have been developing to conserve the Cerrado, a vast tropical savanna that covers around 25% of Brazil and is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. It is also one the most threatened biomes on the planet, requiring urgent and comprehensive action from all sectors, including companies and non-profit organizations.
